man is adjusting the mattress

As boutique mattress builders, we can make literally anything you want, so how do you know what to ask for? Some aspects will be obvious. You will have a length and width that can only be so many things. You might have a custom corner that wraps around a post, or that is cut off to allow a door to open. How do you make it perfect, though? Should the mattress fill the entire space from left to right? How thick is just right, once you add a comforter? Is the weight a factor?

So How Do We Approach Custom Ordering?

Step One: Length and Width

Let’s start with getting the correct length and width. One consideration is having space to get your hand in when you’re making the bed and tucking in sheets. Our rule of thumb is to make the width of the mattress one inch narrower than the total space. That will leave half an inch of space to fit a hand and bedding on each side. Length is generally less of an issue since there is generally walking space around the foot of the bed, but that is not always true. Most of the time when length is limited as well, the one-inch rule works, too.

Step Two: Thickness

Thickness can be a little trickier, but we have some tips there, too. First, consider your nightstands. Some people prefer them to be lower than the height of the mattress, and some people like them to be the same height, which is a personal preference. Very few people like their nightstands to be higher than their mattresses, since that would mean reaching up to access things that are on them. In the case of home bedding, many people want to order a foundation that puts their mattress in a specific location relative to their side rails or headboard. We can handle this, too!

Step Three: Weight

Weight tends to matter more when the mattress is going in an RV or if there is under-bed storage. All of our regular models are designed to be lightweight since many of them will be in a moving vehicle. Some of our clients have a space below the mattress for storage, and they would prefer not to be lifting the entire thing when they need access. In this case, we like to build a hinge into the mattress, so lifting the entire thing is not necessary.
